Help Elena and thousands of other Oakland workers get their jobs back!

Thousands of hotel, restaurant, stadium, and airport workers have been laid off due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and many don’t know if they will have a job to go back to, even when the economy improves. Some employers have told workers that they are permanently laid off and will have to reapply for their jobs when business comes back. Many workers — especially older workers, people of color, and workers who have stood up for their rights on the job — fear that their employers will use the pandemic as an excuse to get rid of them for good. They fear that a short-term crisis could become a long-term disaster for themselves and their families.

The Oakland City Council is considering a Right to Recall ordinance, sponsored by Councilmember Sheng Thao, that would ensure laid off workers have the right to return to their old jobs before their employers start hiring new employees. This is a common-sense requirement that would give thousands of workers and their families hope for the future.

The Community and Economic Development Committee of the City Council will consider this ordinance on

Monday, June 29th.

A key vote on that committee is District 6 Councilmember Loren Taylor. Please call Councilmember Taylor’s office and urge him to support the ordinance. A sample script is below:

Councilmember Loren Taylor, 510-238-7006

My name is ____________. I live in [Oakland / East Oakland / District 6 / specific neighborhood / major cross streets / address]. I’m calling in support of the proposed Right to Recall ordinance that will be heard by the CED Committee on June 29th. Thousands of hotel and restaurant workers have been laid off, and many don’t know if they will have a job to go back to. Workers need the City Council to act now to give them some hope. Workers who have been laid off due to the Covid pandemic should have the opportunity to get their old jobs back before companies start hiring new employees. It’s especially important for workers who’ve dedicated more time to working for a business to have the first chance at coming back to work. Workers need your help. Can we count on your support?

The other members of the Community and Economic Development Committee are:

  • Nikki Fortunato Bas, District 2, 510-238-7002

If you live in one of these districts, call your Councilmember too!
