Mary Ann Espinoza’s Story
I work at Auntie Anne’s Pretzels in the Oakland Airport. I’m a single mother of two boys, and I don’t have health insurance for them – my job doesn’t offer it. They both love sports, but I’m afraid to let them play, because they might get injured and I couldn’t afford to take them to the doctor.
I have special ring-tones for their schools, and every time I hear the ring I’m worrying that it’s the school calling to tell me one of them has been hurt. My kids deserve to be able to play and exercise without running that kind of risk, just like the children of union workers can.
